Weight Loss Support Clinic

New UK licensing regulations mean that I am now able to prescribe weekly self-administered weight loss injections to suitable patients.

These are designed to support weight loss efforts, enhance overall well-being and improve health outcomes if they are found to be suitable after a full medical assessment.

There are various weight loss injection options that are all prescription medications used for weight management in adults with obesity or adults who are overweight with at least one qualifying health-related condition for example – Type 2 diabetes, osteoarthritis, abnormal lipids, sleep apnoea, hypertension, cardiovascular disease.

The prescription is a self-administered weekly injectable GLP-1 receptor agonist. GLP-1 receptor agonists work by mimicking the effects of a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate blood sugar levels and appetite. By activating GLP-1 receptors, these injections can contribute to weight loss by increasing feelings of fullness and so reduces food intake.

Until 2023, Management of overweight and obesity in adults in the UK included:

  • lifestyle measures alone- diets and exercise advice.
  • the use of a prescribed tablet that reduces fat absorption
  • referral to specialist weight management services which might include a prescription for an injectable medicine.
  • bariatric surgery.

Clinical trial evidence shows the benefits of weight loss injections

  • People lose more weight with injectables alongside supervised weight management support than with support alone
  • In people with non-diabetic hyperglycaemia, injectables plus lifestyle measures help normalise blood glucose more frequently than lifestyle measures alone
  • Weight loss injections may decrease the risk of cardiovascular disease

Check Eligibility

Begin your journey with a questionnaire (sent to you in the appointment booking confirmation email) to check whether you are suitable for this type of treatment and proceed to a doctor led consultation. This can be in person at our clinic in Newcastle upon Tyne or alternatively, a virtual appointment can be arranged for you. Should the questionnaire tell you that you are Not Suitable please see your GP instead and any booking payments taken will be refunded.

Consultation

In order to give our patients the best care we do not prescribe without an initial minimum 15-30 minute consultation PLUS patients must complete a pre consultation medical history form that Dr Davis can see beforehand, safely stored in your medical records. Use our booking form or call us / email us to make an appointment. There is no guarantee that we will agree to prescribe an injectable weight loss treatment and a full consultation using your questionnaire and medical history in addition will always take place to ensure your safety.

Payment

Payment includes the cost of your first self administering injection pen. Payment is taken at this point to secure your consultation and a 15-30 minute appointment can then be made.

Consultation

During your consultation we will discuss underlying causes if any, of weight excess, risks and benefits of treatment, side effects, medical history and your weight loss journey so far. We will assess your goals and any specific concerns and also how to use the injection pen. A refund will be offered if you aren’t able to have or do not want to proceed with a prescription at this point. Any advice given will have been offered free of charge and there will be no further follow up requirement.

Delivery of Your Prescription

Your injections are self-administered weekly. This leaflet helps to explain the injection procedure and also contains one particular manufacturers advice for patients, including storage of the pen.

Diet & Exercise Support

To maximise the effectiveness of our injections, we provide guidance on a healthy diet and exercise routine. Our goal is to help you adopt sustainable lifestyle changes for long-term success.

Initial Follow-up

You will be contacted after starting your prescribed injections to ensure that you are feeling OK at around

• 48 hours
• 2 weeks
• Every 4 weeks (for up to 12 months)

Please note – Your initial questionnaire gives detailed advice on common side effects so that you are aware of these before you take the treatment.

Ongoing Monthly Reviews

You will need a monthly contact with us to check that you are losing weight and that it is safe to proceed with another injection pen. The dose of the next pen will depend on how you have been getting on and this will be a joint decision with medical advice on the best next steps.

Dose Alteration

The cost of the pen may increase if the weekly dose increases. Usually, pens are the same price but they increase in cost if the dose increases. The cost of the higher dose pens (and all pens) can fluctuate a little due to demand. We will do our best to keep prices for our patients as low as possible by using an alternative regulated pharmacy if necessary.

How do I dispose of the needles?

You will be supplied with a sharps box by the pharmacy who will arrange delivery of your prescription.
