We offer expert guidance, support and care
As with any medical treatment, safety is our priority at the Rebalance Your Life clinic.
At Rebalance Your Life Positive Ageing Clinic, we take a holistic and evidence-based approach to weight management, ensuring that every treatment we offer aligns with both national guidelines and the unique needs of each patient. One such treatment option for obesity and overweight, is GLP-1 agonist injections, a medication designed to support weight loss by helping regulate appetite and blood sugar levels. You may know them as examples like Wegovy, Ozempic or Mounjaro.
A Thorough Medical Assessment
Before prescribing GLP-1 agonists, our patients undergo a full medical assessment. I am an experienced GP and I conduct in-depth evaluations—either in person at our Newcastle upon Tyne clinic or virtually—to determine suitability. This comprehensive assessment includes an exploration of the patient’s previous weight loss journey, lifestyle, exercise habits, and medical history.
Only when it is clear that GLP-1 agonist therapy could be complementary and beneficial to the patient’s overall health plan will it be prescribed. This treatment is not a one-size-fits-all solution; rather, it is an option carefully considered within the context of a patient’s broader health journey. I will not prescribe a GLP-1 agonist just because I have been asked to.
Safety First: When GLP-1 Agonists Are Not Suitable
There are clear contraindications to the use of GLP-1 agonists, and we adhere strictly to national guidelines, particularly NICE guidance on overweight and obesity management. For instance, if a patient has ever had pancreatitis, we do not prescribe this medication just in case there could ever be an issue for the patient.
Additionally, there are scenarios where caution is required. Certain medical conditions, while not absolute contraindications, necessitate a careful risk-benefit analysis. In all cases, the potential benefits of a prescription must outweigh the risks before a prescription is issued. We can all accept that no treatment comes with no risk and so we must select patients carefully.
Comprehensive Support: More Than Just an Injection
At Rebalance Your Life, I firmly believe that GLP-1 agonist therapy must be combined with lifestyle improvements to achieve long-term success. Weight loss medications alone are not the answer—healthy eating and exercise remain fundamental pillars of sustainable weight management. I ensure that all patients complement their treatment with an optimised diet and exercise regimen. For those who need additional support, we offer guidance and resources and onward referrals to help them establish and maintain these essential lifestyle changes.
Ongoing Monitoring and Patient Safety
Follow-up is compulsory each month by me before any further prescriptions are issued. This approach ensures that patients are responding well to treatment and that any potential side effects are managed promptly. While side effects are typically mild—such as occasional nausea—patients are encouraged to reach out at any time should they have concerns. I am always just a phone call away to provide reassurance and support at any point.
A Balanced and Personalised Approach to Weight Management
There is no one-size-fits-all solution for weight loss, but for the right patients—those who have struggled to lose weight through traditional methods—GLP-1 agonists can be a powerful tool in reducing the risk of heart disease and improving overall health. I am committed to using this medication responsibly, ensuring that it is prescribed only when safe, appropriate, and beneficial to the individual.
By combining national guidance, medical expertise, and personalised lifestyle support, the team at Rebalance Your Life provides a comprehensive approach to weight management that prioritises long-term health and well-being. All of the time I see patients who have used Wegovy or Mounjaro and who have as a consequence, turned their lives around, improving quality of life and reducing the risks of being overweight.
If you are considering GLP-1 agonist treatment and would like to explore whether it is right for you, we invite you to schedule an assessment with me and begin your journey towards positive ageing with expert guidance, support and care.
